We spent this weekend out on Kellys Island in Lake Erie. There was a geocaching event that lots of our friends were attending and it was a good excuse to go camping on the island. We didn’t have enough time to go up for more than the weekend so we left our camper at home to save some money on the ferry trip. I’m not sure what our rig would have cost to take over but I know a 19′ RV cost $60 round trip and we would have been close to 40′ total. So we were left tent camping for the first time in 3 years.
Normally I don’t mind tent camping and we were lucky we didn’t have to take very much stuff since our friends had their campers. So we packed everything up Friday morning and headed out, it’s actually a fairly pleasant drive even though most of it is only 2 lane. After a pretty smooth ferry trip we drove across the island to setup camp. It was about 2 minutes into setup that we met with our friends for the whole weekend, a giant flock of mosquitoes.
Friday night was pretty relaxing after a liberal application of insect repellent. It rained a decent amount during the night but our old tent help out pretty well with only a couple small drips around the edge.
We had a great day Saturday exploring the island and doing some of the caches. The island has some pretty cool caches including one that’s underwater, and one on a very weird golf course. In the evening we all gathered around the fire for a few hours as storms passed on both sides of us. Finally after most folks had gone to bed we got hit with a real downpour. Those of us who were still awake all jammed in under the Moops’ awning for quite a while until the rain slacked off. Keepeer crashed in our car and I bummed a bed off of BlackBrownDog so we could loan our tent out. Unfortunately it didn’t do quite as well as it had the night before, although it was still better than the tent that was abandoned.
It was a great weekend and a ton of fun. It also reminded me how much I love having our camper. We never did meet Kelly though even after going all over the island.
