Some days I just have the opposite of the Midas touch, I refer to it as “touch of shit”. This morning started as one of those days. First off I had to work on a Sunday, since I’m not paid hourly I wasn’t very excited to be waking up anyhow. I attempted to check my e-mail after getting dressed but hmm no network connection. So I head upstairs and check on things. My Netgear GS108 had every light flashing on and off, that’s never good. So after some quick troubleshooting I determined that it was pretty much shot after 10 months. I had to go retrieve an old and loud 24 port 10/100 switch from the basement and throw it in to get things going again. I got to waste a half hour messing with this before heading in to work.
It seems lots of people have this issue after around a year with this product. I’ve got a support ticket open so we’ll see how Netgear handles it. If all goes well I’ll keep buying and recommending their products. If not they’ll end up on the list with Asus and Linksys whose products I only recommend for door stops.
Update 10/31/07:
After speaking with ~7 different techs at Netgear I finally got an RMA number. We’ll see how long it takes for me to get another switch in return.
Update #2 11/7/07:
I received a tracking number this morning from Netgear so it appears I have a new switch on it’s way.
Update #3 11/8/07:
I got my new switch this evening. I had about give up on it making it today but the DHL guy showed up at almost 8PM. My replacement didn’t appear to be a refurbished unit, but who knows. It’s installed and working just fine. I also noticed during this whole mess that Netgear has extended the warranty on their ProSafe line to be a lifetime warranty. So I still recommend buying from Netgear, just make sure you buy the ProSafe line in the blue metal cases. It’s worth the extra couple dollars.
