TOS – Part 2

So tonight I’m heading to Indiana for our annual “Men’s Escape Weekend” with a bunch of geocaching friends. I had taken the day off but I had a couple things at work I wanted to make sure were working before I left. I got up early and packed my things and loaded the truck. I headed off to work with the intention of leaving from there to go to Indiana.

The truck has been having some issues starting for the past couple months and I knew the the fuel pump’s days were numbered. Since it seemed to only have issues starting I’d decided just to wait until it finally gave out since it could have kept on working for quite a while. So on my way to work the truck started to sputter occasionally so I turned around and started back home. After about half a mile the truck wouldn’t do more than an idle but I was still moving and not causing a traffic issue since I was on a country road. I got about an additional half mile at idle then it decided it was done. I managed to push the 2 1/2 tons of truck out of the traffic lanes to where I was only making right turns inconvenient for people.

So I made my 3rd call to AAA for the year. The first two calls had totaled about 100 miles of towing and this one as going to be 20+ again. I’ve only got 1 more tow left this year luckily there are only a couple months left. So about 45 min later the tow truck arrives and we get my truck loaded and start back to town. We didn’t make it more than about a mile and alarms in the tow truck started to go off. Turns out the tow truck was over heating so we limped back towards their shop which was on our way to the garage my truck was destined for. Turns out that this wasn’t normally this drivers truck, and it was about 3 gallons of anti-freeze short. So after a quick pit stop we finally got my truck dropped at the shop and my Uncle gave me a ride back home. Total damage – Towing $0, Parts and Labor $750, yeah the easiest way to change the fuel pump is to remove the bed of the truck, and the part itself is a module with the fuel gauge sending unit and the fuel pump.

So after loading everything in my wifes car I was off to Indiana, having already had 2 vehicles fail on me I was a little worried about the 250 mile drive, the car made it fine though. I should get the truck back on Monday or Tuesday. The whole thing still cost less than 2 payments on a new truck, so I can’t complain too much.
