Hop on the GrandCentral train

I’ve been using Google’s new GrandCentral service for a couple months now and I have to say it’s really cool. The service is currently free but they will eventually start charging, and I’d gladly pay a reasonable price to keep the service. Since I only have one phone I’ve mostly been using the call logs and call recording to keep track of work calls to my cell phone. It’s also fun to leave custom greetings for people. Here is an explanation of the service from Google:

GrandCentral gives you ‘One Number…for Life’ — a phone number that instead of being tied to a device or a location, is tied to you. Use GrandCentral to centralize your communication, customize your callers’ experience, and make sure you never miss a call you want to take (or take a call you want to miss).

GrandCentral isn’t just another VoIP call service. We’ve tapped into VoIP technology to build our service, but GrandCentral works with cell phones, desk phones, VoIP lines, and everything in between. There’s nothing to download, upload, or install, and you don’t have to make or take calls using a computer.

GrandCentral will let you define which phones ring, based on who’s calling, and even let you ListenInTM on voicemail before answering the call. We use smart technology to route your calls. So, if you’re already on a GrandCentral call, we’ll recognize it and use call waiting to reach you on the phone you’re on.

With GrandCentral, you get:
All your calls through a single number. Add your other numbers to your GrandCentral account and then make your own rules for how and when your phones ring. Go to the Settings tab and look under Phones to add forwarding numbers and change your settings.
  • All your voicemails in one place, saved for as long as you want. If you don’t answer a GrandCentral call, your callers will be sent to your GrandCentral voicemail. You can then check messages by calling your GrandCentral number, by logging into your account, or by checking the GrandCentral notification email.
  • Handy features that work the same way across all your phones:

I still have 4 invitations left so if you’d like one you’ll have to give me a call, if I don’t answer just leave your e-mail address on my voicemail. I’ll even make it really easy on you.
