For my day job I manage a very large number of computers for a well known private university. That’s enough about work.
I live in a small city outside Columbus, OH with my wife and our cat. We’ve been married since 2003, my wife and I that is, the cat is still single.
I’ve had several hobbies since I’ve been pretty active in, I’ll start from the current ones and work backwards.
I’ve been pretty heavily involved in geocaching for the past few years. I’ve found over 1000 geocaches and attended over 50 events now. I’ve also planned or assisted with a pretty large number of events. You can see my detailed stats by clicking the geocaching link at the top of the page. I’ll be continuing my duties this year as the grounds manager for the Midwest Geobash, wrangling 100s of campers into their sites with them all arriving on the same day. Lately I haven’t been geocaching much unless I’m going out with friends, the cost of gas is just getting to be too much.
Geocaching and mountain biking before it got me into photography. I try to do my best with the decent little point and shoot camera I have, eventually I’ll spend the money on a good DSLR. You can see plenty of my work in my photo gallery.
I really also enjoy camping which led us to buy a pop-up camper a couple years ago. We try to make it to as many geocaching events as we can that we can camp at.
I try to get as much time gardening in as I can. We haven’t got much done in the yard around the house yet but my houseplants are taking over the kitchen.
Before I got into geocaching I had several other hobbies. Most of them have slipped through the cracks though since I don’t have the time anymore.
I was a member of the National Ski Patrol for a short time working at one of the resorts here in Ohio. However living 2 hours from the resort it got to be too demanding to drive 2 hours in winter weather, work 12 hours between training and patrolling, then drive home again. I really wish I’d been able to continue with it but it would have required me to relocate to keep things working effectively.
I was also pretty heavily involved in a mountain biking club called the Spokejunkies. I used to go riding almost every weekend. Being married it’s too much of a time commitment anymore though since all the good places to ride are at least an hour away from home and it ends up taking most of the day to get in a good ride. I still help out with the website and some of the GPS technical details.
I also like to play golf, paintball, and go fishing now and then. I’ve also done a fair amount of car audio installs.
Needless to say since I work with computers all day a decent part of my spare time is spent fixing and building computers or playing with some new technology. My big project over the past few months has been to switch to open source applications for as many of my needs as possible.
